I like in Orange County and outside of a couple Mexican places and sushi, the restaurant business here is completely unevolved. Arguably the worst metro area in the US for dining out. Where's the French, the good Chinese, Tapas, Italian, Japanese (sans sushi), Peruvian, etc... Just can't find it here. I've tried LA, as well...just as bad (if not worse).

Can,

While I agree with you about OC, I disagree with you about LA!

Outside of the chain restaurants, Los Angeles has some of the best eating establishments in the country, whether they are dives, cafes, or upscale.

I don't like Asian food, and I haven't found any Asian restaurants here worth trying twice, but for:

French - La Petit Jardin, on Pico and Robertson
Peruvian - Pistachio Cafe on La Cienega and Wilshire
Italian - Campanille on Wilshire and La Brea
Eclectic - Napa Valley Grill on Wilshire and Glendone
Diner - House of Pies in Los Feliz
Dive - Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles

That's just to name a few. Feel free to check out my 360 for my restaurant reviews.

Oh, I MUST disagree, at least on behalf of Los Angeles. I'm originally from the Midwest, and moving out here was a total wake-up call for my taste buds! I can list restaurants you're looking for, all within about a 5 mile stretch of Santa Monica Blvd.
Perhaps you need to look at the smaller Mom and Pop kinda places? If you see an "A" rating, give it a try. The best Mexican food I've found is a place about the size of my apartment, cash only, very affordable, and knocks my socks off every time I eat there - at least once a week now. Not to mention an authentic Mom and Pop Italian place too - very tiny place, and every dish is better than the last one.
Good luck to you!

If you are itching for a food fight you're come to the right place. LA has more upscale restaurants than any place in California. Big time chefs and the best ingredients available. Look at the LA Convention and Visitors Bureau website for a massive listing. Also, the beach cities, Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan have top flight fish restuarants. Look harder.

you obviously have NOT been all around LA at all.

If you want good japanese food, go to little tokyo, an expensive restaurent in either beverly hills or hollywood/fairfax area, or sawtelle and olympic area

if you want chinese food, go to chinatown

if you want mexican food, go to olvera street on a sunday, or tot eh many good mexican restaurants in west LA area

if you want korean food, go to korea town

if you want yummy persian food, go to westwood

same with indian food and italian and all other kinds of food.

you have to get out of the valley, there is nothing there. the west side of LA has everything, you really have to search cand find the nooks and crannies, there are some really tasty delights.

Try Bakersfield where Applebees is high class dining! I am off to LA for Easter. Can't wait Canters deli here I come! Do you like Cuban? There is a great Cuban restaurant on Venice Blvd just east of National Blvd.

I lived in Orange County for 12 yrs, and there are tons of good restaurants. There are italian, american, mexican, asian, french, etc. I love dinning out evertime I go back to the OC in CA. I don't think u are looking in the right places. Go to Hunginton Beach, Santa Monica, Long Beach, etc.

If you're looking in south OC-you're looking in the wrong place! North OC is where it's at....you will find any of those places you mentioned in Fuulerton, Brea, Yorba Linda & surrounding areas. You've just got to look a little harder!
