It supposedly has some historic value (about 8 minutes in the entire movie); otherwise it seems like "300" is based solely on someones weird dream. Mostly, the rest of the movie consists of 300 well-muscled men running around just in the equivalent of bikini-sized SPEEDOs !!! (Now I know how they got the word "spartan") UGH, not really appealing in the midst of quite graphic blood and gore shots. Bottom line: don't waste your $$, unless you really enjoy flying body parts!!

looseley based on a reale events. they did fight off a bunch of peopule with 300 men, but they didunt fight in slow moshun and Zerkes didunt look like a drag queen.

there is an artacul in ew next week that explanes the fact and fixyun. here it is:

When the vast Persian army met 300 furious Spartans at Thermopylae back in 480 B.C., they didn't bring along any charging elephants or rhinos. Their leader, Xerxes — who sported a ZZ Top beard rather than a sexually ambiguous, hairless physique — probably sat on his throne and stayed away from the front lines entirely. And Ephialtes, the Spartan who played a key role late in the showdown, was likely not a deformed hunchback.

Such liberties aside, 300 stays true to historical accounts of the battle. The titular number of Spartans, joined by other Greeks, really did hold off Xerxes' swarms for three days at Thermopylae. Several catchphrases in the movie, such as ''Tonight we dine in hell!!,'' are taken from the Greek historian Herodotus and other sources. The Spartans held off the Persians long enough for the Greek forces to regroup and ultimately topple Xerxes. And while the Spartans likely did not fight in slomo with abs rippling, a historical consultant on the movie argues that 300's beefcake would have pleased the Greeks. ''Their vases and literature were not realistic,'' says Dr. Victor Davis Hanson, an expert on ancient warfare at Stanford. '''Heroic nudity,' they called it. They made people bigger and more buff too.''

its based off of the battle of Thermopylae where the persians were trying to take over greece. there were approx. 1 million persian invaders going against 7000 Athenians and 300 Spartans. Since they were so outnumbered the Spartens told the athenians to go home so no un needed people would die, and they would hold off the persians while they escaped. THe persians thought that the spartans were a joke so they sent 10000 men to take care of them. since all of the spartans knew that they would die, they were extremely pumped up to fight, also the spartans are know to be the best fighters because they are raised from childhood to become soldiers. After the spartans killed the 10000 persians they were stunned, they became very angry and unleashed their whole army. For three days straight the spartans held their ground, until eventually the persians just killled them all with arrows. After the battle the persian morale was destroyed, so they were unsuccesful in trying to capture greece. All because of those 300 spartans... its amazing, isnt it?

It's based on the actual Battle of Thermopylae between Greece and Persia. The 300 were Sparta's best warriors(Sparta was a Greek city) and their job was to hold the pass between the mountains at all costs. They - the 300 - were, according to history, all killed. but, the Persians failed in their attempt to conquer the world like Alexander the Great did.

Loosely based on fact, (the defense of Sparta by the 300) plus a lot of fiction, Hollywood style, to draw a big crowd.
