5/9 (girls) do not take part in sports.
Subtract 5/9 from 1 (the total) to see how many boys take sports.
Subtract 5/9 from 9/9 = 4/9 of those who do not take sports are boys.

4/9 of 540
multiply 540 by 4 and divide the product by 9
540 multiplied by 5 = 2160
2160 divided by 9 = 240
This gives you the total number of boys who do not take part in sports.

You can prove to yourself that this is correct by figuring the number of girls who do not take sports in the same way 5/9 x 540 = 300.
The sum of 300 girls and 240 boys gives you the total of 540.

Let G be for girls, B be for boys, S be for those who do sports, NS be for those who do not do sports

540 x 5/9 = 300 => # of girls who don't do sports
540 x 4/9 = 240 => # of boys who don't do sports

1800 x 2/3 = 1200 => # of girls
1800 x 1/3 = 600 => # of boys

600-240 = 360 => # of boys who do sports
