I am not pregnant so this is not for me. When a baby is born does the hospital automactially perform a drug test on the women or baby? Even though a women says they didnt do drugs? And if so what is it called?

If there are signs of drug abuse in the mom, they will test the mom. If the mom is positive or if the baby shows signs of withdrawal, then they will test the baby. Usually the baby will show positive before the mom will. Babies don't metabolize drugs, so they stay in their systems a lot longer then the moms. That is why babies born to women who have used drugs can have problems. I have seen many babies in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) because of drug abuse by the mom. It is horrible to see!! They just make your heart ache for what it has to go through. But it's better to know when the baby is born, so there is a chance to get the baby help. A mom that is having a baby should be totally up front and honest about her history to her doctor. That way, if there could be a problem, it's known ahead of time and the doctor can perpare for it.

Its called a drug test and they will only do it if they suspect the mother used drugs while she was pregnant or if some one reports that the mother is using drugs or if when the baby is born it shows with draw symptoms

I hope that you re not asking because you or someone you know is pregnant and taking drugs and you are worried. If the baby shows signs of any problems or classic withdrawal symptoms they will do a drug test.If there is drugs in the baby's systems Child Protective Services will step in and possibly take the child away.

not unless recuested by iether mother or a familly worker.
if your concerned 4 a baby or mother do something about it now because once the baby is born and if it has been recieving drugs from a mothers blood stream. the baby can get very sick as it is also depenedent on that drug. it need s 2 be detoxed if it is a strong drug.

If the doctors are suspicious, then yes they may do a drug test. Doctors can tell by the symptoms the baby exhibits if they may be addicted to drugs from the womb. I don't know what it is called, but if you know someone who is doing drugs while pregnant you should really intervene and try to stop it.

It depends on what state you live in. For instance, in South Carolina, all newborns are tested. If the baby is positive for illegal drugs, the state will prosecute the parent. There are other states with similar laws. Also, please consider that blood samples are routinely done on newborns. I'm not sure what they're specifically tested for though.

They will do a test if mother tested positive for any drugs while she was pregnant. They will also do a test if they have suspicions, or if baby has problems. I would assume it is called a tox screen just like it is for adults.

Where I live they do drug test all newborn babies....and if they are found to be positive for ANYTHING....the mother is prosecuted for child endangerment. I'd tell you good luck to your friend but I'm more concerned for her baby....poor thing....I hope he/she doesn't spend it's entire life paying for her mistakes...
