I need step by step instructions for cleaning off an old computer and just setting it up with Windows 98. There is nothing on the old computer that needs to be saved.

you can boot from the win98 cd in dos mode , and run fdisk. If it is difficult for you then just run the command
format c:\
after that you can reboot and continue with installing 98.
Details instructions on the link below

You should have a copy of a win98 startup floppy disk which will have the FDISK and FORMAT utilities.

Go to the harddrive manufacturers web site and download a copy of their latest installation tools. Use their sofware to perform a low level format or what may be called a zero fill test. This will erase the drive completely, reinitialize the magnetic domains and test the drives media all in one operation.

Next reboot using the startup disk and use FDISK to partition and set the active partition. You can then FORMAT using either the boot disk or the Win98 CD.
