Watch some old Hitchcock movies like Psycho, Vertigo, etc. They rely on mood and acting to scare you, not special effects.

I don't really have an opinion on this, because I can't stand to watch a scary movie for more than 15 minutes. (I literally ran out of the room while watching Amityville Horror, and I hid my face the whole time during Jeepers Creepers 2).
But if I had to pick the scariest movie of all time I would pick "Sing and Dance with Barney".

Hate to show my age, but Exorcist was the scariest movie when it first came out. No one had done anything like that on screen before.
The Shining was also quite scary... It didn't help that I was writing a novel at the time, either....
(All work and no play makes Boomer Wisdom a dull boy.....ditto ditto ditto ditto ditto...)
Of couse, I'm still scared of the Flying Monkeys....

Saw 1 2 or 3. There not just scary though. there gross at times. But they are really good movies with a twist at the end of all of them.

The most disturbing films would have to be the most realistic, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Silence Of The Lambs.
Although Halloween certainly was creepy, as it was one of the first films I ever saw where the killer just couldn't be stopped.
Also, honorable mention goes to the original Alien or John Carpenter's The Thing. Watch either of them with the lights out.

"THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT".
I remember this movie being so wierd that I left a cinema with no feelings for it but jumped with every single noise for about a month.
I have to say that I have about 500 DVD in my personal collection. But I am AFRAID to even have this movie at my house. How creepy is that?

I would say "The exorcist"! To this day, I can only watch 15 mins and I can't no more because it freaks me out bad. Also the fact that it was a "inspired by a true event" creeps me out too!

The Shining.
Identity is also a little scary when you first see it. also, it's not like most scary movies.
