Suppose a group of people -- researchers or students or frat boys -- ran across a piece of information/artifact/person that after they all realized what it meant -- they all decided the planet would be better off if they were all dead and worked out a plan to ensure their own destruction.
Basically, my question is: what would that information/artifact/person be who would push a group of otherwise rational people to suicide?

The quick answer would be that whatever they found is going to destroy the world's population by a long, slow, death and it was going to use them as a means to do it. To foil the plan, they all decided to commit suicide.

I just hope it never happens. I am worried enough as it is, for the future of our children with the world the way it is.
In order to actually come up with an answer to this, maybe the answer would be the devil was here and was for sure going to do awful things to children.

We discover that there really is life on every other planet, and we are killing them all, and the universe will die soon if this plant wasn't destroyed. i'm assuming this is for a science fiction story? of it was supposed to be something that could potentionally be true, sorry. can't think of anything.
