If you're good with woodworking, then you can build yourself an awesome bass for less then 1000. I built a 6-string, purpleheart bass with a custom made fretboard and EMG pickups for about $700. That's with getting stuff on ebay. Fender is a good bass if you're going for store-bought. Don't buy through the mail but you can check a MusiciansFriend.com to see what you can get for you money.

I've found that Ibanez makes some really good basses for under a grand.
