She is required to play Billie Holiday in a competition.

Not only should she be Billie Holiday the second she walks into rehearsal, but every second of the day! After all, she's Billie Holiday! It doesn't stop! Really talented actors get inside their role and become that person on and off the set or stage. She needs to research and study mannerisms of Billie to get a real Billie Holiday stance to make them believe SHE IS Billie.
I'm assuming since she already has this role, she has the monologue, correct? Have her practice in front of a mirror watching her facial expressions and seeing herself react. Run lines with her constantly.

Have her start with with researching everything on Billie Holiday, and make her see/listen everything that has to do with her.
Then have her research the times she was most popular.
Basically you have to know EVERYTHING about Billie Holiday, and almost feel like a stalker to actually be somewhat prepared, listen to recordings of her voice (speaking), then watch how she moves.
The only way for this to go well is if you advise her into basically BEING Billie Holiday from the second she walks in the door to rehearse the monologue.

Best would be to spend a day with Billie Holiday and watch her every move; but she is no longer living. So the only thing to do is see if she can find old films with as much footage of her in them as possible.
