First put a dish of baking soda inside and leave it closed up for a couple of days. Then trade the baking soda for a dish of vanilla and leave that closed up in there for another two or three days.

I would suggest putting a layer of baking soda in the bottom (don't skimp - the stuff is cheap), in contact with the wood; leave it for a couple of days. Then turn the box upside down, and do the same thing with the "ceiling" of the breadbox. After that, do each side for a day or two, as well as the back and the door. Six surfaces, 12 days, and your breadbox should smell much better.

Get some pandan leaves and put them inside for 2 days. After that you can use the box with no stink at all.

If it's made of unfinished wood, try some bleach. If it's made of tin or aluminum try rubbing it with a paste of cream of tartar and water. If none of that works, or if it is painted, try soaking it with vinegar. Salt and/or baking soda may also be helpful.

you can wash it with water and vinegar; or borateem; or place some new cat litter or baking soda in it for a few days; or sun it....
