Many people believe that the media is "liberal", others believe that the media is "conservative" (i.e. Fox News). My question is two fold: first, which way do you think the media generally leans, and why? Secondly, if there were a more unbiased news channel, would you watch?

I work in the media and I know it leans toward the left. People use Fox News to "prove" that the media is conservative, but fail to mention all the other networks and cable channels. Dan Rather, just last week said that the media has a liberal lean to it.

The Conservatives have done a fantastic job of convincing people that the media is liberal. They repeat that line so much, it would be hard not to believe it.

The reality is somewhat different however.

The radio waves are owned by conservative talk radio, and as you have indicated FOX news is conservative too. I feel that MSNBC leans to the right and CNN leans to the left. I don't see an obvious slant in most network news.
The newspapers are also split from what I can see. USA today is certainly a conservative paper, and the NY Times is Left.

From my viewpoint, the media is split right down the middle (just like the rest of the country)

well, the media's goal is to expose as much information as possible, which goes back to the "sunshine is the best disinfectant" argument. but a lot of things they need to expose are being censored by the government, so a lot of times the lean of the media is opposite of what the government is.

since the government has been predominantly right leaning, the media has been more left leaning. the fact that his current governemt also likes to keep many things secret that past governments didnt also makes it seem like the media is anti-right.

in theory, the media is there to provide information which promotes social growth, and since social growth and change is more left than right, it seems like the media is more to the left.

so it would be pretty tough for a news outlet at this current time to be unbiased because the american government has become pretty far out to one side (as far as recent american govs have been).

the BBC has a pretty solid following internationally as the least biased news outlet, so i would suggest that, but people farther out on the right say it is critical of the american government.

The media we have today is anything but liberal. Hence the reason brokaw and Rather left journalism. I havent found but one msnbc's keith olberman as semi liberal. The rest are propaganda tools for the government. Appalling as it is the internet might be the only real news we can get and soon that may be taken away from us.

In my experience it is the ownership of TV channels, newspapers, radio, or who pays for the advertising that gets to call the shots. I am led to believe from internet articles that in the US, for instance, most media is owned by Jewish concerns.
