sunspots cause solar flares. the particles leaving the sun travel towards the earth. these particles can affect electric lines and mess up communication sattelites out in space. this isnt good because people are left without electricity and sometimes cell phone communications. hope this helps!!!!

Sunspots occur deep within the sun there much cooler than the surrounding surface when over two sunspots get close to each other there occurs a mighty explosion called a solar prominence this prominence ejects plasma far out into space. some of it reacts with the earths magnetic fields and causes the aurora borealis. Many other phenomenas also occur, to many to mention here

Great Question!!

We are asked this all the time at our observatory by visitors .
The primary affect on the Earth is on our ionosphere. This is the very upper part of the atmosphere. Increased sunspot activity frequently accompanies an increase in the outflow of matter from the Sun in the form of a "solar wind". Charged particles in this wind can interact with atoms in the upper atmosphere and sometimes wreak havoc with our communications systems. It can interfere with the operation of satellites by introducing background static. During periods of heightened solar activity, the Earth's upper atmosphere swells up slightly in response to the extra heating, which in turn increases the rate of decay of satellites in low Earth orbit.

In addition to affecting navigation and communication systems, solar storms expose aircraft and their passengers to increased radiation levels . While these risks are small and most of this radiation is absorbed by the ' outer skin' of the aircraft , it may have long term effects on pilots and other frequent fliers.

The strength and duration and possibly debilitation of our powergrids etc depends how active the sun is, which is related to the number of sunspots observed !

Sunspots are magnetic storms that generate radio energy. This energy is sent out from the sun and when it reaches earth scrabbles our communications as they are like energy. Gets worse every 11 years.

Variances in the radiant ouotput of the Sun can cause warming and cooling cycles (such as we are now experiencing). Also, the highly charged particles which erupt from the Sun during a Solar Flare can cause communications outages and even power distribution failure here.
