Good Night and Good Luck is a great one. It's about the McCarthy hearings, but that's one of the more significant stories from that time period. And I believe it's rated PG.

If you're talking US movies, probably none better than "The Best Years of Our Lives", the 1946 Best Picture winner starring Fredric March, Myrna Loy, Dana Andrews and Teresa Wright. It tells the story of three vets (one an amputee) returning home to a small town and dealing with the changes in their lives and everyone and everything around them. Although it focuses on standard, white, middle-class characters, its situations are an accurate reflection of the immediate post-war period, and a fairly honest look ahead at the problems that were to come.
Plenty of material to think about, and launch study topics from, as well as being an excellent, stirring drama that can, and very well may, strike chords in today's world as well as serve as a reminder of what was.
