OMG...I am so shocked...I bought 2 gerbels, both sisters....we handled both the same time..about 3 weeks into our new pets...we found one dead and half eaten...WOW....it was gross...incidently my little boy cried..and cried...we took it back to the pet store and they gave us a crash course on the subject...so we then bought hamsters..they are the cutiest things..they are dwarfs...anyway, they are so tiny and cute...we put them in different cages...so my suggestion to you is this: if the baby is weened from its mom take it out of the cage of its mom and put it in one alone...but you do need to pet it and hold it daily to just let it know its not alone....hamsters do kill their young no matter what and gerbils do eat their mates or family members....eventually....just their nature....gross isnt it....

There's really no need to touch the babies, until they are old enough to eat on their own, and you'll need to seperate the males from the females.
