It depends on what you are looking for....Austin is very eclectic and known for its music scene....people like to refer to it as the "Live Music Capital of the World" and more recently people have chosen to use the slogan "Keep Austin Weird" ...I think they are talking about preserving the local music culture and businesses the way they are, unique. I suggest you visit 6th Street to get a real taste of what Austin is about. Austin also has the University of Texas. Austin is also known for being a big party town. You've also go the Colorado River that runs through there...(great for tubing and rafting) and it is a hop and a skip from San Antonio. Dallas is bigger and more populated....it is right next to Fort Worth...both are so big and growing so fast that most people just refer to it as the Dallas/Forth Worth Area....plus you've got the surrounding areas...I know so many people that live in Dallas, but do not actually LIVE in Dallas, per say. Fort Worth is known for its Stock Yards with shops, restaurants, night clubs, rodeos, stock shows, historical landmarks and events. You've got Denton, just north of Dallas that has the Texas Motor Speedway, if you are a NASCAR fan....DFW International airport....Canton Trades day, the biggest shopping event in Texas (happens once a month) is not too far away...and you are a few hours from all the casinos in Shreveport, Louisiana. Dallas has the University of North Texas in Denton and many, many more colleges.

I think it depends on a number of things 1) your interests 2) your age and 3) if you are planning on moving - what do you do for a living. I am from Dallas and I will be moving to Austin next summer. Dallas is more commercialized than Austin. Austin is very fun and laid back, there are a lot of creative industries in Austin. There is a lot more things to do outside in Austin if you are an outdoorsey type. I wouldn't base your decision on the weather (less tornado vs ice storms). Maybe I'm too practical but I'd say go where you can find a job.

I live in Dallas and really like it! Austin is a cool place too though. Dallas is always growing and has alot of things to see and do. Both cities have alot to offer. Dallas is a bigger metropolitan city, if that is what you are looking for. Both places have a good art and music scene. Both Dallas and Austin are prone to tornadoes and ice storms though. Anywhere you move there will be some sort of weather problem no matter what. it's unavoidable anywhere you go in the world. I suggest visiting both places on two seperate weekends or something to compare the two cities to see which one you can see yourself living in more. To experience a place first hand is the best way to do it!

I'd definitely go with Austin. It's a much nicer city, with lots more cultural activities, not as hot as Dallas (despite being further south), and fewer rednecks per capita. Traffic in Austin isn't that much different from that in Dallas, especially when you consider that Dallas is the intersection of I-35, I-30, and I-20!
Whoever said above that Austin was small must not have been there in the last 25 years or so; the Austin metro area has about 1.4 million people - not as big as the DFW metro area, but certain not "small" by any standard that I understand.

Think of it this way, in Dallas you have all the major sports team (football, basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, and even a NASCAR track). Plenty of clubs! Plenty of trendy communities.
Austin is a nice place to visit, but it's a huge college town, due to UT Austin.
Pick the place where you're not going to get bored.

Don't worry about the weather. And traffic is bad in both cities. I would vote for Austin, though! More fun!
