I know that Black Sabbath is probably the most important band that shaped/created heavy metal as we know it today, but I think that they've been put on a 'pedestal,' much like Jimi Hendrix.

For example, Satriani, Vai, Johnson, Malmsteen, or Petrucci could run Hendrix into the ground.

When it comes to heavy metal, I prefer Judas Priest and Iron Maiden to Black Sabbath. I know all three bands are important, but I can't understand why people automatically think Black Sabbath are the best metal band that ever lived. I'd take Judas Priest - I don't care who came first.

Besides, I like most of Ozzy's solo work (with Rhoads) more than his time in Sabbath.

Any opinions?

ozzy is just a regular vocalist singing with a regular voice, it was the heavy guitar riffs of Tony Iommi that made the first true sound of metal. before they were called Black Sabbath they were a local blues band called "Earth". but when Iommi was working at a sheet metal shop his finger tips got cut and it was hard for him to play guitar cuz it would hurt and some how it made a heavy sound. i like black sabbath with DIO!

Founding Fathers of heavy metal and carved the way for bands like Judas Priest. You are right Vai, Malmsteen et al could technically run circles around Hendrix, but remember these guys expanded on what was done previously. None of the guitar players were original in their own right. Guitar players by nature tend to copy or modify one another's style. Randy Rhoads actually got his ideas for hammer-ons and pull offs from Eddie Van Halen after seeing him play. The technique is the same, but Randy's sounded different the Eddies, because he expanded and used them a different way. Malmsteen didn't pick up a guitar one day and just start shredding. He listened to to and copied others techniques, then used his own take and talent to make his own sound. Malmsteen is a huge fan of Randy Rhoads, but doesn't sound like him, much like Judas Priest doesn't sound like Black Sabbath. However, listen to early Judas Priest. They also had a very primitive sound. Alot of it had to do also with the technology of the day. Nobody ever said Black Sabbath was the best band that ever lived but they influence at one time or another all the players you mentioned above in some way. So.....show some respect........
