In windows 98 you could run a scandisk by opening the program and doing it there and then. I find in XP you have to right click hard drive > properties > tools > check now > tick two boxes > click start > then have to reboot your PC to get it working.
Is there a simpler way of doing this????

from a command prompt
CHKDSK C: /F
answer Y to run the chk on the next reboot
Reboot the machine

You can run just CHKDSK C: to
perform a check with no repair. But if there is an error, you have to use the /F switch to fix it.

A reboot is required to performed the fix due to lock file conditions

In the Run menu type in: chkdsk /f
If you get a message telling you it cant find check disk, then you'll have to browse to the windows folder and click on checkdisk the first time. After that it will always find it.

actually there is no need of running scandisk in win xp pro. as it is a SMART compatible OS which means self monitoring analysis and repair technology and it also recognises the errors in the disc and repair them automatically
