Since I set my buddy on fire in organic lab a few years back, I have safety in mind.

I haven't really seen a good chemistry set for a child in a physical store in years. If you are in the states, a store called Hobby Town USA, sometimes carries decent child chemistry sets. You would probably really want to order one online though.

This one seems pretty good:

I had an awesome kit as a kid where you actually had to heat up and bend glassware. The don't really make them like that anymore. Too many lawsuits, lol.

You might try a few toy stores, or check on-line with a search engine. But in this day and age of overbearing child safety, product lawsuits, kids making bombs to take to school, etc. etc. etc.? You'll be lucky if just asking doesn't get you picked up and questioned.

Try a craft or hobby store.
