You can get a background from anywhere. Try a Yahoo! image search and filter them by size to narrow it down.
A layout is better because it generally includes a background and much more.

layout makes things transparent, makes colored borders, moves things around. a background is just a picture behind your profile.
to find layout sites, just look at everyones profile and there are usually links to where they got them from.
