he changed it at the beginning of this season
he changed it because that is the number he had in high-school

Because it was his high school number, but it was not first available when he entered the nba.
It also refers to his work ethic "24 hours a day" showing why he is nba's best player right now.
Also it was kinda one uping jordans number which was 23
It it boosted his jersey sales to #1 this year make his jersey the most sold in 06-07.

becuase he was sad that nobody was buying his jersey as much, so changing his number would make more people go out and buy a new jersey, he susosedly said that 24 was his number in HS, and he really liked that number, so why he go 8 in the first place? kobe is all about the money
