the players by fining them everytime one of them or the coaches critizizes the officials or league management? It is a slap in the face of all those who have fought and died now and in past wars protecting our constitutional rights, and David Stern is violating the one we all hold dearly, freedom of speech and expression.

The First Amendment pertains to Government not private business. The NBA is a PRIVATE business. I hope no one ever died in a foreign war to allow a bunch of spoiled, over paid b-ball players to bad mouth the source of their income.

First you have to understand the Constitution. David Stern is the leader of a private...underline private company. That means he has the right to dictate what his employees will do and say within their employement contexts...including comments made to disparage the officials and the league. If the players don't like it they can leave. And I gaurantee the terms of these fines are in their contracts which the Constitution also protects.

The other responders are exactly correct...if the owner of a private business says you can not go on camera and criticize your coworkers/referees, then guess what, you had better not do that. Besides, even if you do call it freedom of speach, your freedom of speach ends where my rights are violated. Saying derogatory things about someone on tv is considered slander, which is not legal...so keep watching the NBA...
