I'll share with you the same answer that I gave another person.
Anime has been around for a long time, but just now it has becoming popular.
Anime, as you may know, is the Japanese word for animation cartoon. Though it is a cartoon, people (mostly teens and young adults) like anime for many different reasons. Some reasons are: it's not kiddish (as are most cartoons), it has violance, sexual apperance (hentai, or whatever) bad language, it's on another level of humor that is not kiddish-stupid and the detail (color, shading, style) unlike that is shown here in America.
I believe people prefer anime more than american cartoons for it is more towards them (the teens age group) than kids (though a lot of kids watch it too, though they shouldn't because it contains A LOT of mature stuff that kids shouldn't watch), plus anime, i guess, has interesting story lines (or plots) that are way more interesting than cartoons that show different stuff every episode, while anime continues on and on until the episodes (or series) is over.
There are a lot of different reasons (most of them I have said) but I think another reason is that it is from a different country and not here in the U.S. Stuff from other countries amazes U.S. citizens so much. This is just my theory...

Children are always fascinated by the animated world. The reason is simple, because in the animation world, the characters do many things that we can not do in our real life. Moreover all the animated movies has a small portion of comedy, heroism, fun and frolic. Therefore the children are taken to their fantasies. Although there are many advantages from seeing these movies there is also a tinge of bane.

not all young people do and anime well some of it is like cartoons for older ppl. like Inuyasha, yu yu hakusho rated pg-13. and others like Mirage of Blaze or gravitation might be like 16 and up. And I know there are some that are for 18 and up .*cough* keep the kids away from that.

Well it depends on how young your talking about. If they are like 5 i think it just depends on what catches their eye. 10 they are old enough to decide what they like and anime in itself is very different from normal animation. The way it looks the way the characters interact with eachother is very different and it appeals to them more. Also the subject mater is normally different Such as lets compare Bratz to Inuyasha TOTALLY DIFFERENT SUBJECT MATTER and well lets be honest Inuyasha is much more appealing...

They like it because it's different, and then they get obssesed. If some animation from Europe came they'd get obssesed to, or maybe because the art is so fasinating like Hayao Miyazaki's works.
