Music is, by definition, an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

Rap contains only rhythm. That's it. (And no, not THAT kind of color.) It takes an easy-to-learn type of lyricism to master rap, so if it is considered music, it's not good, skillful music.
Rapping requires no melody (let alone harmony), thus no singing, thus no song, therefore, not music. :)
That was easy.

I only listen to Classic Rock but I would take disco over Rap anytime. At least you can understand disco. I can't believe this is what kids call music today.

Are you serious? Sounds like you haven't taken much time to research your facts rap and r&B are not the same thing. Hip hop is music for the people (there are different genres) but apparently you can't relate...Not everyone is rapping about getting shot or F$%^ a shorty. That is mainstream and what sells so that is what they play on the radio. There are artist such as Jay Dilla, Madlib, De la soul etc. etc.. I see you with a guitar in your profile picture, apparently you don't know your history--there would be no rock and roll with out rythem and blues (which r&b stands for)

Rhythm & Blues is not Rap dude. I don't much care for rap or disco but there are more than a few R&B artists I like.

Just to let you know, R&B and rap are two totally different things.

R&B is like India Arie,Chris Brown,Beyonce and other such.
Rap is like 50 Cent,Papoose,Paul Wall, and those other things that make women sound like whores.

I personally like all types of music, from Rap to Alternative to Country. So,yeah,I do consider rap as music.
It's not sending a good message to anyone, but it still is music.

ok, lets put it in perspective

they dont play instruments...they talk, instead of sing...the beat is made up on a sound board or taken from some other artist with various loops...you go to a concert and everyone and their mother has a mic and you still cant understand what they say...lets not forget the numerous references to how many times they say their own name in the song or on the album

so should it be considered music, not a chance in hell

Its music because it has a beat, but when it comes to actually singing, there is none. I think its more music when the singer actually sings along with the music. Not screams and cusses the entire time. Sometime I just cannot understand what they are saying!

i think rap is poetry with a little music in the background. they're not singing music notes, carrying tunes. they're speaking their poetry with some background music to make it sound more appealing.

Yes, and I even like some of it. Just because you don't like it, that doesn't mean it's not music.
