that you would not be seen and judged by God and there was no karma?
I'm thinking about Iraq at the start of the conflict, when society breaks down and there is no law people seem take the opportunity to loot, steal and murder.

I think the doing of the right thing should be a way of life.
But during Katrina or a national disaster, it is not looting to get a bottle of water or some food. But taking TV's and clothes?
that was horrible.
In Iraq there is many hero's I am sure of people who risked it all to save others. Just as there had to be a villain who takes advantage of the situation.
that is the case in every country. the majority of people did not go along with Hitler. It was only a few.
But they were the prominent ones.
In this country how many go along with the current administrations policy's? Yet we all suffer by the decisions they make. Or benefit which ever the case maybe.
But I truly believe it is ingrained in us to either help people or take advantage of them. Some people are just good and some are just wicked.
some ran down there to New Orleans to help at great expense. Others went there to loot. why because they thought they could get by with it.

That happens when the society as you say breaks down. If you make an analysis of a mob lynching a person, there are observers who see people of the mob as lessworthing individuals and think they would never be part of that mob.
But the people of the mob themselves think they are doing something good or at least not bad or that they are helping the society to get rid of what they consider evil.
The members of the SS in the Nazi Germany could not have been murders if there had not been a Nazi government, but they became murders because the law protected them, and the fact of having power over the lives of others caused their ego's been over sized.

Answering your question, I can tell you that fortunately I don't belong to the kind of people that give more worth to the legal than to the moral.

I KNOW that I would not unless it was absolutely necessary to survive myself. I know that my wellbeing is based on the well being of others and that when society suffers, I too suffer. I understand my interdependence on the world and the people, plants and animals in it.

To the best of my ability I want all people to be happy and content as then they tend to be more pleasant to live around. I don't suffer fools lightly but won't steal or cheat a fool unless I were starving or needed medicine from a corrupt doctor or druggest.

I know that anyone is capable of any amount of crime or irrational behavior given certain circumstances...lack of sleep, starvation, reactionary fear, Post Tramatic Stress...but if I'm in my right mind, I wouldn't do it. I can't do what I feel in my heart to be wrong...even if I won't be caught or punished. Teasing or playing a trick on someone is one thing but hurting people and becoming reckless and lawless is another.

I would never run crazy in the street stealing and vandalizing for more than one reason...I hate crowds and I hate noise. I would go camping in the mountains just to avoid the ruckus.

I live in a society.

Society exists as you give in you get back. Both good and bad.

In society, if law and order broke down, there would still be those who believed in trust and humanity required to create the society, and thus things wouldnt totlally break down.

You are I assume, thinking of what would happen if for exapmle you were starving, would you steal food from a blind man?, well there are many examples of selflessness in day to day life, where people go out of thier way to put them selves in danger to help others live. This is called humanity. As long as this exists we have a society. As long as society exists we have a degree of law and order.

Yeah they do.....I guess there are serious factors in their environment that allow them to do that. There are loads of books written about the thin veneer of civilization but you have to remember these people are distressed and I presume, not having much luck with anything else. So why not take the opportunity?
I would not personally do that if I were suddenly offered the chance to do it, because I dont see myself as having any kind of need justifying it, living in the first world 'an all and having enough money to buy a computer.

No, I would not do it, whether I could or not. Rape is always pointless, I would kill only to defend my own life or the lives of my family, and I would steal for the same reasons.

I think people do things like that because humans are elementally flawed.

War brings out the worst in some people including financiers, arm dealers and others ready to make a quick profit besides the lowly looter.

But, no, I wouldn't rob, kill or rape because even if no one else found out, I'd still know and have to live with it.

Wouldn't rape or kill, unless we're talking about particularly harmful individuals like bushy or blairy, but might half inch a few things off those who i thought deserved it or owed me.
Thinking about it i'm not sure if i could bring myself to kill anyone at all, even blair or bush, but i might rape them if it got on the news.

definite i'd, definite I do, No i do no longer prefer a genuine purpose nor reason, it would not sit down on my conciounce and that i'd sleep like a touch one. the guy i'd kill would be by way of fact I dislike that particular. i do no longer could hate or envy them to kill them. even with the undeniable fact that, you will extra appropriate wager your candy existence that i'd kill'em the 1st risk I have been given!
