Pregnancy is FILLED with aches and pains and the uncertainties that go with them. Try not to worry. The early symptoms of miscarriage are spotting (light bleeding) and cramping. Cramping is a somewhat ambiguous term, but this early in pregnancy it would be discomfort that comes and goes (not necessarily in regular intervals) in the pelvic region (think...under her belly button).

Pregnancy causes the joints of the body to loosen in order to accomidate impending changes in shape, so this may be causing your wife's back pain. I'd mention it at her next check up.
