I like Anita Baker. Do you know any other singers who performed at her time and had similar vocal color regardless of sex?

Cheryl Lynn... Jody Watley, Natalie Cole, Whitney Houston , Stephanie Mills, Karyn White, Ashford and Simpson, And especially Jill Scott she is a Jazzy Sultry artist... Roberta Flack is good also but i highly recommend Jill Scott Check her out ... Good Luck in your search :)

She's not from the era of Anita Baker,but Amy Winehouse has a nice soulful voice as does Toni Braxton and Michael Buble.

Yes, Anita Baker has a very "smoky" voice. Dionne Warwick's voice was not smoky, although her range is similar. You might look into Melanie Safka, who didn't become as famous.
