We are playing a song in band. We don't have a trombone, and trombone has the melody. Would it be possible to bump the part up an octave or two and transpose? Or would it just not sound the same?

Can a flute play a trombone part? Yes. Will it sound the same? No.

If it all possible, you would want a trombone to play the trombone part, but that's not possible. Next choice would be euphonium (baritone). In order to sound the most like the original, it should be a brass instrument that plays this melody.

But if you really want flutes to play the melody, transpose the melody up by one or two octaves depending on the register that the trombone plays. Of course you would need to convert the music from bass clef to treble. Just know that you are substituting bold and brassy for light and airy.

I play the flute, but I don't think the song wouldn't sound the same if a flute were to play a trombone's part.

For one thing, the flute is one of the higher pitched instruments in band and the trombone is one of the lowest. And the flute is more melodic and soothing.

Maybe if you played the trombone part in the same octave on the flute. Or maybe, just get a different lower pitched instrument to play the part like a bass, basson, baritone etc.

Hope that helps.

Well you could do it, but it just wouldn't sound the same, see the problem is that the trombone is a bass instrument, while the flute is a woodwind instrument, also you must remeber that the flute has a much higher pitch sound than the trombone. You could try replacing the trombone with a clarinet or some instrument with lower pitch sound than the flute

As a former trombone player in high school, I can't see that it would work. Woodwind vs. brass of that kind? Flute just doesn't have the power of a solid trombone line.

You would definitely want it played by the Euphonium/Baritone. or the French Horn (or even Tuba!)....Flute doesn't have the same timbre.

Also, Flutes read treble clef and Trombones read Bass clef, if you WERE thinking of transposing.

Our band once swapped themusic for a Sousa march all around. We had tubas playing the clarinet part, trombones playing the drum part, and before we got very far, we wereall laughing our a^#*# off.

But you can try it!
