A degree in journalism or writing would be a good beginning. You might also try to secure an intern position w the sports department of a local paper to get some basic experience & exposure to the inner workings of the paper.

Then it's mostly a matter of hard work, commitment to the sports field , & doing a good job w every assignment you accept to write or cover a sporting event. It never hurts to make as many friends in the business as you are able to either !! You never know who might open a door for you in the future!!

Good Luck !!

If in HS then join your school's newspaper and cover the sports section. Get proficient at knowing the stats, writing about what's happening concerning sports and learn how to interview people well . To write for major sports media then it's helps to graduate from a good journalism school (although not absolutely necessary) - be sure to write for the sports section of the university newspaper. During summers try to intern at major sports newspapers and magazines. After college don't get discouraged if you have to start lower than where you want to be - it takes time and experience to write the columns for the majors but things go quicker if you meet the right contacts. Some perks are having your own column, free access to games, traveling, and being around important sports people.
