A college is usually a smaller two- or four-year school whose student body is made up of only undergraduates.

A university usually has both graduate and undergraduate students. Large universities are usually broken up into smaller colleges focusing on certain areas of study--education, social sciences, liberal arts and sciences, etc. Each college usually has different general ed. requirements and a separate advising office, and in the case of very large univerisities may even have its own graduation ceremony, or separate recognition ceremony before graduation.

A "University College" is usually a college devoted to freshman living (what we call "The First Year Experience") within the university. A college is a subgroup also within a university--thus, College of Business, College of Education. But some states and other groups also distinguish between "college" and "university," and those designations usually have to be approved at some state level (a higher education coordinating board or even the legislature).

a college can also be a pre-existent constituent of a University that maintains its own integrity after joining the University. This is often the case with religious Colleges, which might have been functioning as Universities, that join with other colleges to form one University. In this case the identity of the college is not based on a field of study, although it might in practice offer programs that are denominationally based.
