If he's six weeks old he should be hungry every time he's awake, just not ALL the time he's awake. If you're offering water sounds like he's on a bottle. Make sure he's getting enough, a full meal, up to 6oz I'd say wouldn't be too much. If he's crying after that it shouldn't mean he's hungry. Track how much he is eating. He may just like to suck. Try a passifier. Some babies are just fussy and you can't do anything about it. I would suggest a feeding schedule. Now that doesn't mean you don't feed him if he's obviously hungry. He could be going through a growth spurt. Feed him as soon as he wakes up from a nap, Make sure he's eating at least every 4 hours. He won't starve and doesn't really need the water. If you'd like to get a book about it I'd reccomend Babywise by Gary Ezzo. I know that there will be people below me telling you how horrible the book is and that you're starving your child if you follow it, but I worked at a daycare and some adaptation of it worked for every kid!
I almost forgot! If breastfeeding, has she watched what she eats to make sure it's not affecting her milk supply? If it's formula, has she tried different kinds? It could be making his tummy hurt! Also, gas drops can work wonders!
Hope all goes well!

Babies have small tummies and should eat every 2 hours, tell her to feed the baby. Water will not hurt but should never be substituted for milk. PS sounds like the fussiness is gas, tell her to give baby infant gas drops.

Water is ok to give a baby. If he's fussy he could be constipated or have gas. To fix this, I broke up half a peppermint candy and mixed it in with some luke warm water until the candy was dissolved. It works wonders.

No, babies should not have water before 6 months. It can interfere with a babies ability to absorb the nutrients in breast milk or formula. Too much water can cause water intoxication. A few sips won't hurt (I gave my son a few sips of water before he was six months but only because it gets really hot in the south). Consult with your doctor first.

No, it's not ok to give babies water. It will mess up their electrolyte balance. Of course he's ready to eat whenever he's awake, he's a newborn. It could be that he's fussy because she's not feeding him enough, or he has gas. If he's on formula, she might need to switch to another kind (ie soy, lactose free, one without DHA). If she's breastfeeding she might need to try eliminating certain foods and seeing if that helps.

I have a very hungry 7 wk old boy and my doctor said it is ok to give him a few ounces of water during the day. Even suggested giving him an ounce or two before his regular formula to fill him up more.

If the baby is getting the recommended amount of milk for a baby his age a day then water is fine. But she needs to boil it to kill all the bad stuff in the water

it is NOT okay to give a 6 week old baby water, he needs breast milk or formula ONLY. it is totally normal for a baby to want to eat all the time, for your nephews sake, tell your sister that she should not give her baby water, he really needs the nutrients from breast milk or formula. it is very very important.
