We were without power for over a week this winter so to heat water we filled an aluminum kettle and heated it on a propane burner outside. Worked well but left the kettle with a thick layer of soot. What works best to get rid of the soot?

Try baking soda and a wet cloth.

you can get it off with oven cleaner,or a good degreaser.or even clr or tarnex
