Is it just me, or does it look like every college athlete has a ton of ugly looking tattoos.

How did they get so much money to afford a dozen tats and the free time to do them? My view is that the team with the most tattoos and the worst looking applications of tattoos will probably win the NCAA hoops.

We noticed the abundance of cheap and tacky tattoos also.

Hubby decided if he was the coach, they would all have to wear shirts to cover them during a game.

Makes you wonder how long it will be before they start having advertising tattooed on their arms with the money going in a fund avaliable to them on graduation or going pro.

You are right though, it's pretty nasty looking. Most look like Saturday night beer drinking experiments.

The tattoos don't have all that much to do with whether or not basketball is a "black man's sport" as one previous poster commented. Nowadays, tattoos are more accepted and therefore more prevalent in society as a whole, regardless of race, age or gender and they are even acceptable at some workplaces. I think that most coaches realize that this is a trend that isn't going away and have simply accepted it as part of the changing times.

I think that when you see a team of 12 or 15 people with maybe 3 or 4 (just throwing out a rough, general number here) of the team members having tattoos, it does start to seem like a lot of athletes have them. And I'd guess there are probably many more athletes who have tattoos but have them done in places that aren't visible to everyone else because they're normally covered by clothing, such as the back, chest, abs.

I do agree that some of the tattoos are a bit nasty-looking, but they don't bother me. If someone wants to get something hideous inked on himself or herself, well, that's a mistake for the wearer of the tattoo to regret later. I focus more on the game than I do on the players' tattoos or uniforms. I really don't care if a player has a hundred ugly tattoos just so long as that person plays hard and is a decent human being.

A lot of these guys get tattoos before they even get in college. I've had a few friends who I grew up with that played Division I ball and got tattoos between high school and college, so at that point a coach couldn't keep them from doing it. The same guys also got them done by free-lance tattoo artist, who often don't ID them and are about 1/4th the price of a professional tattoo artist. I also know guys, not just basketball players, but football players all the way to musicians who get tattoos for dirt cheap as along as they "advertise" who hooked them up. Kinda of like free advertising.I'm sure it's probably the same situation for a lot of players on other teams as well. I doubt, if they are getting money from "the program" that they're using it on tattoos.

I also think it's hard to cover them up in college due to the fact that we're talking about a jersey and shorts here. They can always do the Iverson sleeve deal, but that's not going to cover up the upper part of the arm/shoulder. Also the more you have on, the more there is for a defender to grab to slow you down. So it's hard to ask someone to wear a t-shirt underneath.

I think there are a lot less players then you think with tattoos, it's just tends to be the one's that have them have a ton of them.....and they stand out. And I think that since tattooing has become so popular it's hard by coaches to regulate it nowadays. And truthfully, it's their right as a "legal" adult to make the decision whether they want to have one or not. I guess it falls into the category of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". We may hate em' but there's always someone that looks at them as art.

The tattoos don't have anything to do with how well they can play ball, but I agree with you. They look like crap. Sort of like jailhouse tattoos. Yuck!

It's not just college it the pros as well. It's really unbecoming and is borderline unprofessional. I could never go to work looking like that.
