I installed a deskstar 40gv as a second hard drive, and if i set the jumpers to the 'disable auto spin" on the slave setting when it gets to the bios screen it says that there is an error with the slave drive, and i can not get in to the bios setup. if i set the jumpers to slave only, windows xp loads fine but the drive spins continuously. any know how i can fix this?

depending on the age of your pc, i expect newer because your os is Xp, but, open then screen (4got name) where you would edit your pc.s startup options, you need to set the hard drive with the os on it as primary, 2nd harddrive should be set to, well, secondary. depending if u have a floppy drive, cd drive.. etc... This is order you should have you drives set to: 1: Primary): Hard drive w/ os
2: Secondary): Secondary Hard drive
3: 3rd): CD Drive
4: 4th): Floppy drive ( If u have 1)

Now, this order should change thus if your computer crashed, you will need to rearrange the order of these drives to where (say u have a start-up DISC) you willl need to have you CD Drive has primary so that you PC would load from that boot-disc....Get it?
