I definitely recommend Guadalajara, Jalisco , Zacatecas, and Cuernvaca. Guadalajara is a big city, but it has tons of things to do there. I had a blast there, and there is so much to see, the people are great, it's just the best place Ive been.

Well, I'd say to stay away from the coasts and focus inward. There you can see real Mexican culture hapenning. In Guadalajara I saw many "White" looking Mexicans, so if you want to show them brown ones, go to the smaller villages. There's some outside of Guadalajara that may just be perfect.

Mexico City, Cuernavaca, Guanajuato, Puebla, Zacatecas... There are a lot of places full of art and history, and full of nice people.Your kids will love it! And yes, stay away from the beaches, they are beautiful but tourist-oriented, not the real Mexico.
