The Franks were one of many nomadic Germanic tribes that battled each other and the remnants of the roman empire for land and power during the dark ages.
They began in Germany, and eventually settled into France and Germany. Their greatest leader, Charlemagne, made his capital in Germany at Aachen, also called Aix-la-Chapelle.
They emerged as the strongest of the germanic tribes when Clovis led them to victory and conquered Gaul. He then began a line of kings known as the Merovingians.
Later, Charles Martel led the Franks to a victory over the Moors as they attempted to win control over parts of Gaul. This was the Battle of Tours.
His son, Pippin the Short, was named King of the Franks and thus began the Carolingian Kings. The second Carolingian King was Charlemagne, who united much of mainland Europe under his rule and Christianized much of what we now call Europe.
