I wouldn't exactly call it racist, but it could look that way. I adopted a dog in North Carolina from a pound. My husband actually picked her out, but when we got home, she wouldn't let him near her.
Everytime she seen a black guy, she started barking and went totally crazy. She did not like men, especially black men.
She finally learned to like my husband and adored my little boy, who was only 1 at the time. Those were the only 2 men she ever liked in her 12 years with us.
In all those years, she still went totally crazy when seeing a black man. I'm pretty sure that she used to belong to a black man that used to beat her. She definitely knew the difference in race though.

Animals such as dogs or cats are certainly not racist unless they are taught to dislike color or taught to dislike a race by smell. Dogs and cats can understand commands in the language of the country the owner lives in.
Another misconception is the fact dogs are color blind. Doctors are split in half on this and only because the dog's eye is different than the human, but trainers have proved it over and over again that dogs indeed can see colors. One man had 3 people sit down in the audience and each had different colored shoe laces on. The dog was a German Shepherd and sure enough when the man called out "find the blue shoe laces" the dog went right to the blue. I thought the dog was trained in this manner, but then someone from up in the audience came down with plain white shoelaces and the man then gave the command to the dog to find the white shoe laces and he did! My 3 year old Bichon Frise can tell the difference between her yellow ball and her red one. I just have to ask her to go get the yellow ball and she'll pass the red one and hunt for the yellow one. It was quite amazing.
Think of this one ... who are humans anyway? We actually know little about the human race and the brain was the least studied organ of the body. Many scientists can come up with some theories and that's all they really are, but every day of our lives animals and people alike continue to prove them wrong and amaze us.

Animals do not understand racism. However, there used to be, and still are some, what are called "White Dogs", that are aggressive towards blacks. They were really popular in the 60's. These dogs were trained to be that way. There are some animals that, for whatever reason, do not like certain races. I had a German Shepherd when I was a little girl, that hated blacks. He was not raised to be that way. Who knows?

Believe it or Not
We raised about 40 baby chickens from mixed backgrounds, about half were white and the other half were black. They had several different mothers and fathers. They were hatched in an incubator together. As they got older they together the black ones started picking on the white ones. One by one they started killing all the white ones until we separated them. Later we were able to put them back together without any problems. We laughed and wondered if they were racist.

Animals can associate certain types of people with negative experiences. For example, a dog treated poorly by it's male owner could learn to be afraid of males. The same goes for any other "type" of people.

I have seen normal animals shun an albino of their own species so in some ways they could be considered racist. I've seen this in rabbits and squirrels.
