we are cattle breeders and we won't breed brothers and sisters. it could cause defects in the offspring. but left alone, yes they can mate.

The taboo that keeps human brothers and sisters from mating is cultural, not biological.

Mammals do not have this cultural taboo, and therefore will mate with siblings when they come into heat or rut. In some pack and herd species where there is a dominant male or female (wolves, etc.) a "brother" may be prevented from mating with a "sister" because the alpha male controls the mating. But should the alpha male die or be displaced and the brother took dad's place, he would then mate with his sister.

Yes, it's called inbreeding. They don't realize the brother/sister barrier like humans do. However, it's advised to keep sibling animals apart unless they're fixed, so there are no genetic mutations of any sort.

yes they do.

puppy mills do this all the time..that is why you should never knowingly buy a puppy from a puppy mill.
its not good for the breed as it weakens them and causes a lot of defective off spring

Sure. I had a hamster that was pregnant when we bought her. When she had babies, they grew up and mated with their mom (gross) and had more babies (oh goodie!), so - no, animals aren't picky who they have sex with.
