Like I mentioned, I have an '88 chevy silverado, and it is really getting bad on the rust. The rear fender wells are all rusted out, then cab corners and rocker panels are shot, and the front fenders are half way there. And all around the truck in little spots the paint has a spot of rust here and there. I've been told before that this model of truck or just around these years, that it is just the design of it that causes it. Is this true? Any input or info about this subject is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I know that the late 80's early 90's models of the Silverado trucks had crappy paint jobs. Mostly the clear coat will peel off. I have seen several trucks around the area I live in that have no or little clear coat on the hood and top of the cap. This is a factory paint defect. The only cure is a paint shop. Yes, if you don't fix the clear coat problem, eventually the body will rust.

They all rust when they've been driven around the country for 20 yrs. Secondly, where has this truck been driven in the last 20 yrs.
I had a 1989 Silverado for 10 years that did not have any rust on it to 1999 when I traded it off.
I think yours got into the salted-snowy roads for 20+ winter seasons to get really bad rust.

They are all going to rust out, sometime. Can't do much about it unless you live in the desert and never drive on salted roads. Once it gets started there is very little you can do to make lasting repairs other than start replacing fenders and cab corners. Even the replacements are going to rust out too. Actually the 88s' and newer models were a big advancement in rust control, used galvanized sheet metal and had weep and drain holes built it.

they will all rust out as you no and yes them year of trucks and older wear know en for rusting in them spots most had enamel pant and just the basic primer over a salt spray layer and had a lot off spots for dirt and salt to hide in the panels. they started working with epoxy primers and base coat clear coat and that made thing better but still will rust in hiden spots over time. i hope this shines some light on your question

This truck was built during the time when the US government, using all its wisdom, decided to tell the auto manufacturers how to paint cars and trucks. The results you now see. I take it you live in a harsh winter area as well. Most trucks and cars painted during the late 80's have this problem, due to the cause I mentioned. Eventually, the feds backed off after problems arose, went back to DC, and devoted all their time to screwing us in other ways.

not sure what to tell you here, what I can tell you though i to check out a product called "Naval Jelly", it is supposed to really help with rust, at least rubbing it out as opposed to sanding and what-not. Check it out, i posted the product in my source.....
