Here, i'll answer your question straight up, only a little bit of C02 will come out of the tank when you take it off, as long as you take it off quickly, i dont recommend leaving the tank on the gun, it can freeze the parts in the gun and the next time you use it they can break very easily. But only a little bit of C02 will come out, maybe 20-30 shots worth.

many Co2 tanks have a shut off valve on them. so you simply turn a knob and shut the tank off then fire the marker untill the pressure is out of it and take the tank off.

some of the really old tanks (and the really cheap ones) still have a pin valve on them when you screw the tank onto the marker there is a piece of metal in the center of the adaptor that pushes a pin in on the tank that releases the Co2.
with these markers as you unscres the tank some C02 will escape but you do it quickly and it seals itself off.

of course most people are useing compressed air or nitrogen (N2o) now. and these tanks are much more expensive and almost always have a shut off valve.

you can leave on the gun but eventually some of the air will leak out.
so that is not your best option.

When you unscrew the tank from the gun, only a little air comes out also as long as your pressure valve works you should have no problem

C02 is not used much in PaintBall anymore. Most people use compressed air. The airflow can be turned on and off at the tank.
