Our liberal friends that like to throw the word around using it to describe anyone they don't like should look the word up. Simple def. various hawks that prey on poultry. I have no clue why they use this word in the manner in which they do.

That's someone who clamors for war but avoided serving in the armed forces. Vice President Cheney got a series of 'deferments' that allowed him to stay out of military service even though he was selected to be drafted into the army. President Bush avoided service in Vietnam by joining the Texas Air National Guard, but failed to show up for months at a time. Anyone who's served in the armed forces can tell you that they would be arrested as a deserter if they didn't show up after 30 days. He simply resigned and got away with it. Men like these that used their clout to avoid dangerous service and yet press for war are termed chicken hawks.

It is the actual bird (Hawk) that swoops down and plucks his/her prey (Chicken) Hence the word Chicken Hawk
Beings I see the term used in a different fashion as well - My understanding that those cases reasons were under another phrases - Chicken Sh*ts, or Yellow Belly Snakes in the grass, Country state-side defectors.

It's now well established that George W. Bush never showed up for National Guard duty for a period of approximately one year, possibly more, in 1972-1973. Despite all the talk about "honor and dignity," President Bush has apparently flushed his down the toilet. President Bush went AWOL!! Cheney himself also received 5 deferments! Both of these men are “Chicken Hawks.”

A chickenhawk is a person who supports a war but finds a way not to fight in it. An example of a chickenhawk would be Dick Cheney who supported the Viet Nam War but got five deferments to avoid serving in it. Another would be Dubya Bush who joined the Champagne division of TANG so he wouldn't have to go to Viet Nam.

Some one who managed to avoid going to war but once in office votes or sends others into battle. Ex. Bill Clinton was a draft dodger but had America go to war with Kosavo.
