Right, your race is extremely insecure that's why you historially discriminate against dark skin people. Melanin is the key to survival in hotter climates.

We want to be what we are not, it's the same across the board, with most races and most people for the most part. I am white, and I won't tan b/c of skin cancer, but since the prevailing beauty standard for white women is to be tan, I am considering getting a spray tan for a special occasion, plus it will help cover up a scar :-D I will have to make sure that it is not too orangy because I saw this poor leathery blonde oompa loompa walking around the mall the other day, I NEVER want to look like that.

I'm a ' pasty white ' California gal. I know what the media says...Yet, my thought is VARIETY. That's where the beauty is...different colors. Why does white get depicted to be the 'favored' color? My thought is that other cultures are the ones that have some color. So, maybe society should be sorry for whites because we don't have any color. Isn't any coloring book started out as just white with outlines just waiting to for it to be filled in with COLOR?

I'm 50, born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 60's era. That time had a huge imprint on me. I personally feel that to judge a person by the color of their skin is...to put it simply...just silly.

Silly...silly...silly...

If the media put a camel out there and said " This is the BEST animal " ! !... I'd think "O.k. fine...that's your opinion...now go away". Silly people. " Best " . . . Schmest. . . Let me see the temperament...that's what I gage what is decent or not...not any color.

Silly people.

Really? I am about to tell you the truth. Lighting in the studio and other places are really bad for dark skin to look good. Oprah's team finally got it right, her lighting on stage makes everyone look good. So I don't think it is a matter of white is more beautiful but black skin is very hard to photograph and does not or did not show up well on TV or Media as you put it. A lot of blacks have managed to overcome this and are very famous for the their looks. White is the majority for now but times they are a changin. A tan for white people makes them look healthy, you know gives them that glow they wish they could have naturally. That is all. Intriguing question.

I am a white person and I know that one reason that we tan is that for "Some" it gives us a more healthy look, for example I am Irish and I have very white/fair skin. I tend to look kind of pale if I do not get a little bit of sun during the summer months.
I don't think that your belief that white people are more attractive than other races. However Models etc, do tend to
have a standard look in the business reguardless of race. That needs to be changed.
Good Question...

you sound prejudice against an entire race of millions. When not every white person tans or gets plastic surgery. I am white and don't lay out or go to tanning beds. I will get a little color but that's because I go fishing and go biking and play in the park with my son, so I am in the sun during the summer. But I don't intentionally get a tan. I usually burn because I am as white as snow. Plus the sun causes skin cancer. Both of parents now have skin cancer. My dad is usually tan every year because he is shirtless in the yard, in the garden and in the boat. Now he has cancer on his back and chest and face. He covers himself all the time now. My mom never tans and is rarely in the sun. She always wears a hat and finds shade to stay under. yet she had a huge area of skin on her chin removed due to skin cancer. My mom is whiter than me :)

Anyways. There really isn't a 'white' person. White as in snow. We are peach, melon, light beige, etc. We come in all different shades just like black people do. All people of all races are beautiful! White, black, yellow, red, brown, orange, peach, even albinos.

Why would you even believe anything the media displays? They lie constantly. But in showing beautiful people of color. There's Halle Berry, Tyra Banks, Oprah, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith to just name a few. I see pictures of them all the time. And they are very talented.

I think it's because the typical "white" people you're referring to are those who are most susceptible to the media, and are the ones that make the media as popular as it is. There are always, and always will be people who are dissatisfied with their appearances. With the new turn of the media to music that is heavier in hip-hop and rap, darker skin tones are emphasized in the culture, and there are always going to be those media-frenzied girls that are going to go out and think that what's on TV now is what's beautiful everywhere.
At this point, their tanning is only emphasized because people of darker skin colours already have the popular skin colour - remember back to when Michael Jackson began turning "white" in an effort to be more popular among his fans? People will always follow the media trend, unfortunately. Always.

Alice Walker wrote a poem entitled "Without Commercials" that discussed this very question. I like her take on the topic. White people should not tan because they dislike white, but rather because they want to see the darker face of the world reflected in their own skin, even if just for awhile. I think this is beautiful...

Because it is just naturally pleasing to the eye [in most cases]. This may have something to do with the idea of having the appearance of having worked outdoors in the sun. It makes one seem more experienced.

Just like people like to buy jeans/hats that are torn or worn around the edges to make it look as though they have been through a lot, or experienced a lot of hard work.

White people are not more attractive than the Blacks nor the Blacks more than the Whites. The White have better hair & colored eyes but the Blacks have good looks too like, better booty & prettier lips. Now on tanning, Whites & even the light skin brown people have an advantage over the Blacks. And they tan not to look like the Blacks but because they want to have a golden brown(NOT BLACK) skin, which looks sexy & cool something the Blacks envy because they can't do.
