This is an easy question to answer to someone else, but it is the HARDEST thing to do as an artist. Inspiration seems to come and go. Personally, I'm in a rut right now and finding it hard to work. All the subject matter I usually use (which is typically depressing stuff) is making me sick to look at. But I'll tell you the best things to think about when trying to get inspired.
Think about your personal feelings and your personal experiences. Where have you been, how have you been feeling, what is your job? Do you go to school? Do you work? What have you seen in your life?
The best art that you create will come from your personal life experiences. It depends on whether you are interested in the aesthetic or idea based art... or both (which is always better). For my art, my current state of mind ends up expressing itself through my art. If I am feeling tied and tangled, I'll create a piece of art representing this.
Are any current issues important to you?
race issues?
economic issues?
governmental and political issues, etc...
Take from your life. Do you yourself experience some sort of prejudiced? Are you a minority is some sort of way? Is there anything going on in the area you live in that seems to bother you... or maybe inspire you or maybe something that makes you feel good. Not all work has to be depressing. It can express things you are happy with also.
I am Armenian, and have always been inspired with Armenian History. I don't know if you know anything about the Armenian Genocide, the first genocide of the 20th century that killed most of the Armenian race and was the beginning of a string of putting genocide in the back burner of national interest. My grandparents were born in the midst of this genocide. The issue is still not resolved because the Turkish refuse to admit to the wrongdoings of their ancestors. The Turkish are trying to get into the E.U. and refuse to admit that they committed genocide, in fear that this will lesson their chances. Turkish people who have spoke out against their government, saying that the genocide did occur have been imprisoned and some even killed in the streets. ANYWAY, it is this issue that inspires me. It is in my blood and because of this it is the most important art I can make. I feel like I am making a difference in talking about it. I am passionate about the subject matter of all genocide because my connection to the Armenian genocide.
Find your own issue that makes you passionate. What enrages you most? What makes you happy? What out there effects your life in some way? Talk about this.
Like the others here, music has always been an important inspiration tool also. When I listen to music, I come up with the best ideas. System of a down and rage against the machine just get my brain rolling.
Also carry a sketch or notebook around with you at all times. Ideas come and go. You might be in the bathroom and come up with a great idea, but forget to write it down, and you'll forget. lol. So make sure to record everything!
books, magazines, and news papers are good tools. Sometimes I'll read a book and want to express something from it in a visual form.

A lot of things just come to my head and I just have to get them out.
But if they don't, I go searching for them. Some of my favorite magazines to look through for ideas are National Geographic, Z!nk, and juxtapoz. However, you can just go to your local bookstore and look at the art and culture magazines for more ideas (or whatever inspires you, music mags, home/decorating, etc). You could also listen to some new music and try to let it influence your work. Or perhaps you just need to get away from your usual workspace, not necessarily take a vacation or anything, though travel is always inspiring, but sometimes even taking a walk can clear your head enough to leave room for small inspirations. You can also look on websites like etsy.com or boundlessgallery.com and look at other people's creations in order to draw from their ideas. Heck, just go to a crowded place and people-watch for awhile-you'll get all kinds of ideas, I do.
There are boundless ways to inspire yourself, the trick is finding which ways work best for you. Good luck and have fuN!

i can't spell so well either , but i'm not often in need of inspiration . in fack i have enough in my head to last the rest of my life . geting started seems to e the hardest part & finshing is the second ! but i work in non-objective forms i sculpture & painting . that's one step closer to the imagination thatn abstract which is taking something form real life & changing it . non-objective is straight from the imagination to form , a little harder . see my site popclt.com , nature is always a good place to look for inspiration & i love citys with tall bulidings . i walk on the beach almost everyday to clear my head & the pier relaxes me & i often find creaive thought s there . being an artist for a living often pushed me in a certain direction & i get direction from the job nessary to complete the asignment . i'm working on a lifelong desire tohave a full sleeve (tattoo from shoulder to wrist) & am busy on it right now with that . so get out your tools , which ever , and get busy ! good luck ! tp. mullin popclt@yahoo.com
