Good question.
There are a number of them. But first try to avoid anything that tends to excite the child after 5 PM, such as cartoons with lots of movement and color changes, computer games, any sodas, simple sugars, anything with chocolate etc..

There are calming herbal teas you can try, but the best is the soothing hands of a mother. Make a tender massage to the child's back, forehead, neck and scalp. It never fails.

Stop caffeine in sodas and chocolate by 4 or so in the afternoon. Stop big amounts of fluid to avoid a full bladder during the night.

No stimulating activity in the evening after dinner. Have a calm restful evening after baths.

I do not know your normal bedtime for your child but any child under about 12 should be be bed by 8:30. If they are still taking naps you could go to 9. But once they are in school, no naps and homework, they need to be in bed by 8:30.

If you include carbohydrates for dinner it will help to induce sleep.

Being consistent is the key. You must keep the same schedule every night. If you do not it won't work.

Give them warm milk, maybe that will calm them. Or sing a lullaby, or, if you aren't really a singer, play a soothing song, like Brahm's Lullaby, by Celince Dion, it is soothing, and will most likely make your child go to sleep, or be very calm.
Hope this helps!

Make sure he is well fed, make sure you got all the gases out (burbs) from the baby, and give him/her a bath. After the bath the baby will sleep sound asleep. You may need to give baby half an ounce to one ounce of really warm formula after the bath. Only a bit of warm formula will be needed, since you will first give baby a bottle before his or her bath. This works wonderfulliy.
