I am interested in pharmacy, and I have researched it and there are a lot of career opportunities. However, I don't know for sure if that's what I want to do, and I don't want to waste time/money taking the courses to get into a pharmacy school if I am just going to change my mind. Is it better to go in undecided, just declare a broad major (like biology or chemistry), or work towards the pharmacy degree? What have been your experiences with picking majors?

Never do undecided if you know what general type of work you want to do. Pharmacy....so if you like science in general...stick with that.

I'm not really sure what pharmacy entails...i'm told its fairly difficult, so it makes sense if thast your plan, just stick with that.

I was premed, realized i didn't like macroscale biology that much and wasn't sure if i would be able to make it. Switched to chemical engineering with a bio option. Kept the doors for medschool opened if i did decide to go that route (i'm graduating in december and still not sure), but gave me a solid major that i could see myself doing and would enjoy.

If you could see yourself doing biology or chemistry...then chose that.....and take the other courses towards pharmacy is what i reccoment.

The only problem i see....i had friends that were premed and decided against it (grades were low after first semester).....it was too risky for them to stay in premed and they really didn't like science that much. Instead of chosing biology as a back up, they just swtiched completely to other random things.

Sooo, i'd say do something that if you for some reason didn't get into pharmacy school, you have a degree to fall back on. I'd do pharmacy off the bat, so you get an idea of what classes you need to take, but then talk to an advisor to find a major thats for you and can work toward pharmacy.

I'm a bad writer...basically with chem e and my bio option......i got all the physics..math..chem and bio that med schools want to see...so it works for both chem e and the possibility of medschool.

One last thing, again from premed since i don't know much about the pharmacy major. Since you need that 3.5 to get into medschool.....about 50% of the program was electives. They gave you your core stuff and then the grade booster stuff. So that could be a downside for not doing the pharmacy major,

Just have an undeclared major until you decide what you want to do. The core classes are required for everyone, regardless of major so just work on those first. Hopefully after a year or so, you will decide what you would like to do. Personally, I changed my major three times and I still finished my bachelors in 4 and a half years. You started on the right track by researching pharmacy because that is the best thing to do when you're unsure. One of my friends that I've known since high school majored in pharmacy and she is now a pharmacist and loves it. Not to mention, she makes a good living!

Since you are still undecided I'd suggest that you take courses in this direction and if after you have all your generals out of the way, all the stuff you'd take no matter what career you'd chose. Then and only then would I decide my major.

But that still may not be enough. My sister-in-law changed her major her third year of college. All because of a television show/movie.

Best of luck.

If I could do it all over again, I would go in with the broad major and find what I'm interested in when I get there. I'm under the belief that going into college, most (not all) college freshman aren't ready to make the decision yet. Ask most people if what they are doing now is exactly what they went to school for and you'll find that the answer is no. I'm a corporate trainer and I went to school for piano performance. Go to school, enjoy yourself, and learn as many different things as you can.

take some core classes that are related to ur major. I started off in biomedical engineering for a year and after taking a few of the courses decided that this wasnt what i wanted to do. Do a lot of research on your potential majors and look at teh job outlook in the upcoming years. I made the mistake of not doing a lot of research on my major and found out that they wernt certified to teach that program yet.

I always went with what I enjoyed. If you are not happy it will not work for you. Try getting a job at a pharmacy to see if you like the whole idea. Good luck, I think it would be a great job.

if you really don't know what you want to do, going in undecided is best. Then take some general classes as they will fulfill your general education requirements, and then i believe they make you declare a major by 2nd year. At least that's how it was at my university.

Try getting an internship, even if it doesn't pay, perhaps at a hospital. That way you have a rough idea of what a pharmacist does on a daily basis.
