Here are some ideas and their pros and cons:
1. Leopard Gecko

cons: special lighting and heat
2. Dog
pros: friendly, cuddleable, easy to please
cons: grooming, picking up piles, training, vet
3. Cat

cons: most apathetic, get into everything
4. Bird:

Well, if you just found the salamander today, I would wait a week or two and see if the excitement wears off. If after a good amount of time there is still significant interest in a small lizard of some sort, you should do a good amount of research before you go ahead and purchase something. Some can live quite a long time and all require special lighting, habitat and nutrition. The books and websites may make it sound simple, but the truth is that it's very easy to make a reptile sick and many people, upon doing so, are not interested in paying a veterinary bill that can approach $75 just for an exam. Think about how your kids would handle it if the lizard got sick and this situation came up, try to come up with a plan to deal with something like that. I won't make any specific recommendations regarding which species to consider, I'm sure you'll get lots of answers with specific recommendations, but iguanas, though popular, can grow very large. That's my advice!

definetly a guinea pig. first of all they are low maintanence. they are very calm and they never bite even if you accidently hurt them. they are also very good with kids. their food isn't expensive and you only have to clean their cage about every five days depending on the cage size. they are very undersgtanding like dogs and have less fur. and you don't have to spend alot of money on them. they also live anywhere from six to eight years and kids are able to clean their cage.

I would suggest something like a hamster. I know it sounds cliche and all.. but my hamster adores my daughter. She will have friends over and he is being handled like crazy and is sooo tame. She cleans the cage and everything herself and that thing is great and so tame. They only live about 2 years though
