Butterfly is going to be the stroke of choice to work your abs. However, it is NOT the hardest stroke. Additionally, the amount of ab work that you do is directly related to your proficiency at the stroke as well as the effort you put forth. This means, that if you are a good freestyle swimmer and a bad butterflier, you might as well concentrate on the crawl to maximize your workout and in turn get better abs.

I'm certain that all the traditional strokes work your abs when you have a good form, however, I really hate butterfly (well it is the most exhausting stroke for me, I don't actually hate it) ... therefore butterfly has to be the right answer.
That being so.. the person who suggested dolphin kicking your way around the pool all day.. I think gets the prize.

They all work great on your abs actually! I've been swimming for a long time and my abs are very built up so swimming in general will build up your abs. I would say that the butterfly will probably work your abs the best. That would be your best bet for building up your abs. Good luck and enjoy swimming...it's a great work out!

swimming is a good workout for all your muscles. but fly is the best stroke you can do to work out your abs. if you want to focus soley on your abs and not worry about having to actually swim the stroke, you can grab a kickboard and just do some dolphin kicking.

Butterfly. If you're doing this solely for ab work though. Lie on your back either floating or with kickboard and do your dolphin kick...its a drill that we used to do on swim team and I remember that would cause serious burning after a while.

All of them work your abs fairly well, but I'd have to say butterfly. It's one of the hardest, but works your abs the most. If you want a stroke thats less crazy, then freestyle would be the way to go I guess.

Definetly Buttlerfly
All of the other strokes are very good also, but they don't work as welll on the abs.

Butterfly or definitely just dolphin kicking because you're working your stomach muscles and stretching them out, then contracting them.
