I could have sworn that NC State was a 7 seed in 1983.

I do know that the lowest seed to ever win was Villanova in 1985 as an 8 seed.

The farthest a 7 seed has advanced in the NCAA tournament was Virginia University in 1984. Featuring stars Kenton Edelin, Rick Carlisle, and Olden Polynice, they won the East bracket, defeating Pat Kennedy's Iona in the first round, 2-seed Arkansas, coached by Eddie Sutton, in the second round, Jim Boeheim-Syracuse in the Sweet Sixteen, and dispatching Bob Knight's Indiana Hoosiers to make it to the Final Four. They lost to eventual runner-up Houston in the semifinal matchup by two points, 49-47
