It's a Greek tragedy. The hero always dies! That's the way all the Greek tragedies end. The hero sacrifices his life for the "greater good". In 300 his dying was the reason that Sparta sends out the rest of its army to stop the Persians. And in turn causes all the other countries to back them up forming a greater army. If the king hadn't died, or rather sacrificed himself, at the end they never would have sent out the soldiers in his name to fix the mistake they made by letting their king die for them.

it doesnt seem fair, but this stuff actually did happen to the Spartans against the Persians. you have to keep that in mind. it's a movie based on factual sources. You'd expect it to happen when you're fighting against about 1200 Persians with only 300 Spartan men. It's unfortunate King Leonidas did die, and it wasn't like he died in the Battle of Thermopylae, he died on his way back. I guess it's okay in a way because the Spartans were able to take out over half of the Persians, even though all of their 300 men had died. and the defeat opened up doors to the Spartans in that Thermistocles was able to take over and he led the Spartans to victory over the Persians at the Battle of Salamis. In this battle, the Spartans had lost only 40 triremes while the Persians lost over 300 ships. They were able to outsmart Xerxes and his troops and were able to manoevre their way through the ships and destroy them.

Yes I think it was fair. As a soilders they where there fighting for freedom for their people dying on battle was an honor for the spartans. If they didn't go and fight there city would have been burned down, the men killed and the woman would have been slaves. What would you have done?

It has nothing to do with being fair. It's an historical fact.
