I know the feeling. How about getting different color folders with pockets and use one for each subject. Label each folder such as biology, algebra, history and keep your latest work in the front of each folder. You can also get separate spiral-bound notebooks or a 3-5 subject notebook. I used to prefer separate ones and of course each one with a different color to recognize them easier.
Also, keeping lists of assignments can be very helpful. Perhaps you can either make an assignment book yourself and just label a notebook, for example, or purchase a large date book for keeping track of assignments and their due date. Wishing you more organized days ;)

Biggest thing for me is to first make sure everything has a home, and then make sure it gets put there. Everyday I take 15 minutes (on a timer!) and just walk through my place and put stuff away.
I always get my backpack ready the night before during that time.

I live alone, i have piles of papers everywhere. I put all my syllabii into a drawer.......then the spot next to my comp on the floor is for one class, the spot on the table is for another.....i have a plasma tv....stuff for one course goes under that.
My T R class, goes under my ps3. It all stays out in the open....then if people are coming over....i just stick a folder inbetween each pile...put them together and shove it under my bed.
After semester is done, i put stuff into a crate...and put the books for that material up top, so i know waht pile of papers is in that crate.

The biggest problem with staying organized is staying on top of clutter problems. Check out this article called 'Decluttering Made Simple'. It explains how to declutter with a few boxes, trash bags, and some simple questions. I hope you read it.
