Yes lots of times. But you have to remeber the exact area, because sometimes it falls off and is a biatch to find!
I tell ya I was probably 12-14 at the time (16 now) and the sound of the train (it's an old timey one with the black smoke deal and puffing) would scare the daylights out of me...me being so close and all. The scariest part is actually on the tracks waiting and then seeing the bright intimidating light stare you down... heh Id do it again!! JK.
I wonder what would happen if it was a gold dollar??

Yes, it flattened the penny.
But then the train dude yelled at me as he said it could have derailed the train. It didn't really make sense as stuff bigger than a penny can be sitting on a train track at any given time, but that's what he said.

No, too risky. A train could come by at any moment, or that penny can become a missile once the train's wheels hit it. Plus, going on railroad tracks is tresspassing on private property.

I grew up next to a railroad and I used to do this often! It's pretty neat how flat they get. It's not the smartest thing to do though... playing next to the train tracks. My kid would be in HUGE trouble if I found out she did what I used to do.

Sure, when I was a kid. You can put small rocks on there and watch them shoot off as the train rolls by, just don't get smacked in the head, hee hee!
